WASH In Schools - Kolkata & Howrah

CLPOA initiated WASH in Schools Project in partnership with ITC Limited in Kolkata and Howrah. Under the ITC Mission Sunehra Kal Project, child friendly infrastructural works (WASH and non-WASH) were covered in three (3) schools in Kolkata and twenty (7) schools in the ITC catchment area of Howrah (where the ITC factory is located).We have also renovated 20 Anganwadi Centers under ITC catchment area in Howrah to create child friendly AWCs for children (0-6 years), pregnant women, lactating mothers and adolescent girls. We covered 4469( Boys-2190 and Girls-2279 )studentsinKolkataandHowrahschoolsand1343(Boys-670 and Girls-673) students in HowrahAWCs during our project period.

Activists:

During this period AWCs and schools Minor repair work including painting of school and AWC buildings, paving of roads leading to toilet blocks has constructed.The walls inside and outside the school and AWC are covered with wall paintings and hygiene messages. BCC (Behavior Change Communication)activities like SDMC (School Development Monitoring Committee) meeting for resource mobilization and monitoring of operation & maintenance (O& M), MTA (Mother Teacher Association) meeting for motivating children to attend schools, hygiene practices, O & M, orientation of teachers on O & M, child cabinet formation and training on good hygiene practices and roles & responsibilities of cabinet members on operation & maintenance of infrastructure facilities were held in all twenty three (23) Kolkata and Howrah schools.

In this project we introduced a WASH KIOSK Programme with students. AWASH KIOSK is a group off our learning corners designed with an objective of “learn with fun” to create WASH awareness & making learning experience rich by strengthening SMC & Child Cabinet. We also celebrated various special days in school like Global Hand Washing Day, World Toilet Day, World Environment Day and World Water Day. On this special day children perform various activities like rally,sitting and painting competition, tree plantation etc.

As part of the co-investment, twenty-three (23) schools agreed to contribute 10% of the total budget. Coinvestment schools are also showing their interest in maintaining schools and establishing ownership of their schools.We covered 4469 (Boys-2190 and Girls-2279) students in Kolkata and Howrah schools and 1343 (Boys-670 and Girls-673) students in Howrah AWCs during our project period. WISE (WASH in School for everyone) – SPLASH

CLPOA is one of the pioneers working in the field of Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Education in school, since 2005 in the State of West Bengal. CLPOA started its partnership with Splash International, USA in collaboration with Sarva Siksha Mission, Kolkata in the year 2015-16. In the year 2023-24, CLPOA has been working in 460 Government schools, locatedin Kolkata Municipal Corporation areas, for ensuring accessibility and availability of WASH facilities. Project WISE team is entirely creating an enabling environment to ensure consistent hygiene practices among students as well as teaching and non-teaching personnel which brings improved water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure and behavior changes programme among the students and adults and strengthens menstrual health services for girls aged 10 and above.The goal of the project is to demonstrate a scalable, durable, qualitative improvement and cost-effective WASH-in-Schools model which can be replicated in other cities and countries. The following activities were done during the reporting period-

Activities:

  • Conducted routine monitoring survey to monitor the existing Wash facilities in the site by observing issues related filter, sanitation facilities, hand wash practice in time of having mid-day meal and interviewing few students about their hand wash practice after toilet use.
  • New Routine Monitoring Survey sheets has been introduced for collecting data from small different school groups phase wise for data analysis.
  • Strengthened the Child Cabinet through child cabinet meeting, digital child cabinet refresher training, activity- based learning and knowledge sharing process which disseminated and wash practice, identification of safe drinking water, maintenance of clean water, advocacy regarding roles and responsibilities, ownership building, sensitization on covid.
  • Done House Formation involving all students of school for strengthening ownership and appropriate use of WASH facilities.
  • Conducted Mass Messaging to sensitize school children about good practice and handling of infrastructure.
  • Organized digital training among students on water, sanitation and hygiene.
  • Held orientation programmeof teachers to implement menstrual hygiene activities, operation and maintenance of filter in their school.
  • Organized MH Training programme among students for knowing scientific reason of menstruation, hygiene maintenance during menstruation, handling myths and taboos, creating Peer Mentor Group of students to sensitize the students.
  • Menstrual health programme among male and female students for betterment of adolescence girls' health by male engagement programme in co-ed school ambiance and to create proper hygiene practice among them.
  • Held Day Celebrations in schools on WASH.
  • Conducted parents meeting for sharing WASH related knowledge, menstrual hygiene programme, participation of school children in different WASH programmes and maintenance of infrastructure.
  • Conducted sustain ability visits to ensure accessibility and availability of filtered drinking water in schools and other services provided by CLPOA.
  • Maintenance of filter, UF change, installation of air pipe, carbon change, maintenance of drinking water stations and hand washing stations.
  • Documenting and sharing the successful case studies through publishing of e-magazine and sharing the good practices.
  • Winding Up programme to encourage school to maintain different infrastructures by their own initiative.
  • Done AMC of filter to provide service against any kind of problem in maintaining filter.

Achievements:

  • 1689 students and 79 teachers participated in the observation of World Water Day.
  • Hand Washing Day celebrated in 11 schools where 473 students participated and 33 teachers were involved.
  • World Toilet Day celebrated in 3 schools and 164 students participated in that day celebration programme.
  • World Menstruation Hygiene Day observed in schools where67 female students and 4 female teachers participated.
  • Total 156 teachers of26 schools were present in Teachers' Orientation programme for improving the sanitation condition in school premises.
  • Organized 25 Parents Meetings to aware the guardians regarding best health &hygiene practices both at home and school surroundings.
  • Child Cabinet Training Programme held in 9 schools and326 students and 22teachers were covered.Child Cabinet Digital Refresher Training Programme is the key component of the project.
  • Child cabinet meeting done in 37 schools in which 744 students and 40 teachers participated.
  • 22600 students and 72 teachers were involved in activity done with House Children held in 32 schools.
  • New sustain ability visit done in 78 schools on maintenance of infrastructures for restoring their precious assets.
  • Follow-up sustain ability visit done in 140 schools which includes follow-up of accessibility and functionality of infrastructure.
  • Routine monitoring survey done in 162 schools to measure the changes of hygiene practice and ownership build up towards infrastructure among the students.
  • New Routine Monitoring Survey introduced in 65 schools.
  • New filter installation done in 17 schools.
  • O&M (Operation and maintenance) training done in 346 schools.
  • Installation of air pipes in 18 schools ensure better running of water filtration system.
  • Carbon change done in 3 schools and overhead tank sensor installed in7 schools for enhancing durability of filter.
  • Water testing done in 160 schools for assessing the quality of purified water.
  • Soap Drive programme held in most of schools.
  • AMC done for all parts of filter in 224 schools.
